ALL AGLOW

A lot of artists talk about being inspired by a type of light, a time of day, and I wonder if this is sometimes seen as a cliche?
But this small painting came into being with a transient sweep of apricot paint, that reminded me, almost instantly of that ravishing, fleeting time of day, sunset or dusk, where the warm light resembles looking though a glass of Aperol Spritz.
A little bit seductive, take a breath, it doesn’t last long.
And this photograph, a few swipes to the left, shows the time at a wonderful family wedding last year where we had all eaten, made our toasts, and sat watching the sunset as they cleared the room for the dancing.
Everything was ‘Aglow’, literally, including the people, convivial, relaxed, and I remembered all of that, and held the memory in my mind’s eye.

Photo of that early evening taken by a fellow guest. N Bordoli.

This was how I was trying to explain the name and mood behind this little painting, when it was propped up, as a bit of an afterthought at the two women show, DUOLOGUES I had earlier this month with Cath Whiteoak at Gallery 19a Brighton.

And the name just came to me – what is interesting as how a small painting can hold so much, and glow in a corner, bringing some warmth, and evoking a special time.

And I think that’s partly how I choose art for my own house, to bring a glow and comfort and intimacy to a Space.

Greeting me like an old friend when I glance in that corner of the room!
