Returning to the most elegant space to show work

I have spent the last two days immersed in hanging my next, and last Autumn show with two other women painters who I love, Carol Wagstaff and Caroline Darke, no egos involved, we have been working together to curate the best exhibition to represent our work in combination.

‘Chaos and Hope’ – an incredible installation by Carol Wagstaff – made from maize, bamboo and paper raffia, she has worked for over -12 hours over two days to install this amazing piece, which documents and expresses her shock and grief at the tragedy of the desecration of Ukraine – profoundly moving.
My painting Map of the Remembered next to Carol’s ‘The Lost children- a collective conscience’

‘From the top of the bus – St Ives to St Just ‘
Caroline Darke – ‘River swim total immersion’

Creating new alliances and connections – and having fun, we all plan to be at the Town House every day of the show 11 am-5 pm — I am looking forward to some some amazing conversations.

Venice – art trip

De Kooning in Italy – Gallerie Dell’ Accademia di Venezia

I have recently returned from a wonderful short trip with a close friend to see this incredible exhibition, by my favourite painter – I was completely overwhelmed, thrilled and nourished as I had hoped to be – the paintings look deliciously fresh, and full of space, depth, power and energy – each one could have been stared at for hours.

We also learned about the time De Kooning spent in Italy and its influence on him, how he saw himself as part of a tradition of artists , stretching back to the renaissance, the incredible compositions mirroring the paintings we saw in the other rooms of the Accademy.

The work had a beautiful mixture of the sensuality of nature, water, landscape, light, human flesh and his journeys through pure paint, totally inspiring and it felt impossible not to be completely present, while surrounded by his work. It is how I hope to be in the studio – and in life as often as I can be, and it feels like I’ve brought a bit of that back with me.

https://www.guggenheim-venice.it/en/the-museum/Peggy Guggenheim Collection – Picasso

The second place we had planned to visit was the Peggy Guggenheim collection, it was magnificent, an incredible setting, representing the work of the founding fathers of modernism, and a fantastic exhibition about the surrealist film maker Jean Cocteau, including a screening of La Belle et la Bête which was magical.

Peggy Guggenheim, the massively influential art collector, lived in this house from 1949-1979 – owning her own private Gondola -from which she explored the waterways of Venice from her own private balcony/ terrace.

Visitors are allowed to explore and sit watching the world go by – I felt like I was in a film, it was so iconic and almost unbelievably beautiful.

Quoted from Peggy Guggenheim, Peggy Guggenheim and Her Friends, 1970-76

‘I dedicated myself to my collection. A collection means hard work. It was what I wanted to do and I made it my life’s work. I am not an art collector. I am a museum.’

In Gratitude – May 2024

Posting this in gratitude for all the amazing connections that have come about through this years @artistsopenhouses, and from being out in the world as a painter, this photograph was taken by @alisonberrettartist who lives near Oxford look up spontaneously yesterday on a trip to Brighton and came to my studio, and we had so much instantly to talk about, and so much common ground about the process of painting, and the experience of opening up your house.

The mixture of fear, vulnerability and excitement, and then such warmth and satisfaction from bringing something to fruition and the support and conversations that come about in the process.

I always feel massively inspired afterwards -having the conversations, I find things coming out of my mind that I didn’t even know I thought – which can be very helpful.

I also absolutely loved having my three fellow artists in our home, they were all cool calm supportive and helpful, and ridiculously talented Emma Stanton who creates incredible sustainable jewellery is a fantastic warm positive presence always and a right hand woman in the house;

Jane Sarre and Amanda Sumpter both brought understated elegance and powerful stillness through their work. I will write another post just about the curation and mix of work.

Surfacing 4 – Amanda Sumpter

The last photograph was taken just over an hour ago at the Open House of the sculptor @eve_shepherd_sculpture – I was there as she made this sculpture from the neck up, and it was literally like watching her subconscious bring about something solid and expressive from nothing but clay and I understood the connection between painting and sculpting for the first time and we talked about how the materials talk to you, and feedback to you, extremely interesting and powerful to have that chance to talk about her work – and very moving to get up close to the clay while it was being worked, amazing – I am a-bit awestruck!

New sculpture in development by Eve Shepherd

I also got a private listen to @eyeplay.music on her cello playing her own original music in the garden studio.

Exquisite as ever. I feel very lucky and grateful.

Also very grateful to be part of @hove_arts who are a brilliantly well organised and supportive community of artists some opening houses over twenty years including Dion Salvador Lloyd https://linktr.ee/dion_s_lloyd – who is always so engaged and supportive.

Watch this space for news of three shows coming up in the Autumn.

Lovely collector’s words – her most recent purchase is here – ‘Invitation’ 30 x 40cm – Thankyou

lam very lucky to own 4 of Kate’s paintings….. from a smaller work on paper to a larger luscious canvas.

I love Kate’s abstract work and the range of colours she uses in one piece – layering and blending the paint creating lots of depth and additional interesting mark making.

I get enormous pleasure from having the paintings in my home and often see new little shots or lines of colour that l’ve missed before. All my paintings still feel fresh and bring a calmness to my home – prompting me to seek another…….

I will be exhibiting new paintings in my home from Thursday 16th -Sunday 19th May as part of Brighton Artist’s Open House’s

News about May open house

The ladder – version three – acrylic on linen 20 x 40cm

I am excited to share that I will be showing some new paintings from my home and studio in a pop up exhibition as part of Brighton’s Artists Open House’s, Hove Arts https://www.hovearts.com/

Open Thursday 16th- Sunday 19th May 2024.

11am-6pm

I am showing with three amazing artists and makers Emma Stanton the jeweller, Jane Sarre the ceramicist and Amanda Sumpter, the stone carver who has recently agreed to join us.

All three create very mindful, thoughtful and elegant work which I think will work beautifully against some of my more expressive pieces, there are shared themes about place, loss and longing and a sort of intimacy and honesty which is hard to describe until you see them.

Amanda says

‘My work is concerned with exploring what is seen and what remains hidden. The carved lines and fluid forms of the sculptures hint at an energy suspended within the stillness of the stones’.

I’ll be adding information to website with details soon- but please let me know if you would like an invitation to the preview.

‘A House Safe For Tigers’

This time next week we will have finished hanging this show – in the beautiful Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square Hove BN3 1EH

Thurs 02 Nov – 11am to 6pm

Private View thurs 2nd Nov 6pm to 8pm

Fri 03 Nov – 11am to 6pm

Sat 04 Nov – 11am to 6pm

Sun 05 Nov – 11am to 4pm

Three Abstract Artists create timeless pieces that explore memory, transcendence and absence as presence. Their individual processes involve layering and excavation and are amplified by the Regency Town House, undergoing gentle restoration.

The title, ‘A House Safe for Tigers’ is adopted from the 1975 soundtrack by Lee Hazlewood and conjures a vivid dissonance between the domestic and the wild, the magical and the mundane.
